The Analog Capital
Why the record never died here
Japan never fully let go of the physical format — CDs stayed mainstream long after they vanished elsewhere, and vinyl came roaring back on top of that. The result is a city with, quite possibly, more record shops than anywhere on the planet: multi-floor megastores, basement specialists, and tiny rooms with a few hundred perfect records. Sellers here are obsessive about condition, sleeves are graded and cleaned, and the shelves hold Japanese pressings — city pop, jazz, rare soundtracks — you simply can't find elsewhere.
"Much of the world's rarest vinyl now lives in Tokyo — collectors travel here specifically to dig, because the density, the condition, and the curation are unmatched anywhere else."
